I get asked about the type of meditation I do. My honest answer is "I don't know". For me, meditation is simply being aware of my mind. Of quietly detaching from thoughts and emotions, and then to observe them as a spectator. This state of mind creates a gap between an event, thought or feeling, and my reactions to it. Creating this space is incredibly empowering, as it means that I have more choice over the my reaction.

3 tips to start meditating:

Experiment with different techniques. If you google "how to meditate", there is an overwhelming amount of information. Remember that these are options, not prescriptions. It's good to try a few and build a kit of techniques that work for you. Different states of mind may need different techniques. Ultimately, the 'best' technique is the one that suits your mind at that particular moment

Make meditation a habit. Slip it into your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. It is more beneficial to meditate less and often, rather than in long, sporadic chunks.

It's not all about you. Practicing meditation has a natural ripple effect on your relationships and interactions with the world. I find that remembering this -that my practice is not just for me - helps me remain steadfast in regular practice. Philanthropist and writer Sulak Sivaraksa said:

"To create a culture of peace, we must begin by acknowledging the violence in our own hearts and learn to disarm it".

By creating a space between action and response, meditation helps us to disarm our inner weapons. Through meditation, it is my hope that more of us learn to willingly disarm our defences.

If you are trying to meditate, then you are meditating.
